The Leq’á:mel First Nation Guardian Program serves as the frontline presence of the Nation’s Natural Resources Department, monitoring, protecting, and managing the lands and waters within Leq’á:mel traditional territory. Guardians act as the eyes and ears of the Nation, ensuring that all activities taking place on the land are consistent with Leq’á:mel’s values, laws, and protocols. Their work represents the practical expression of Leq’á:mel’s sovereignty — combining traditional knowledge, field-based expertise, and modern environmental monitoring tools to safeguard the Nation’s natural and cultural heritage. Services The Guardian Program is responsible for conducting environmental, cultural, and compliance monitoring throughout Leq’á:mel territory. Working in close coordination with the Fisheries, Forestry, and GIS teams. The Guardian Program delivers a range of environmental and cultural services, including: Environmental and Cultural Monitoring Field-based monitoring to ensure that environmental and development activities comply with regulatory standards and respect culturally significant areas. Guardians regularly visit field sites to observe, document, and report on environmental conditions, working collaboratively with consultants and government partners. Fish Salvaging and Aquatic Assessments Certified Guardians assist in fish salvaging, stream assessments, and aquatic habitat monitoring as part of restoration or infrastructure projects. This work ensures that aquatic species are protected during construction and environmental interventions. Field Data Collection and Reporting Guardians collect and maintain high-quality field data to support Natural Resource management decisions, contribute to project reports, and verify compliance outcomes. Community Engagement and Education Guardians participate in school visits, community workshops, and cultural events to share knowledge about environmental stewardship and promote awareness of Leq’á:mel’s land and water responsibilities.
