Licensing helps ensure that business activities are safe, responsible, and consistent with our Nation’s values, laws, and long-term land use plans. A business license is required for any person or company carrying out commercial, industrial, or professional activities on reserve lands — whether permanent, seasonal, or home-based. Holding a business license supports: Fair and transparent business practices Compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards Local employment and economic development opportunities Coordination with zoning and land use designations Common Questions Do I need a business license? Yes. Anyone operating a commercial, industrial, or professional activity on Leq’á:mel reserve lands must hold a valid LFN Business License. This includes permanent businesses, seasonal operations, contractors, consultants, food vendors, and home-based businesses. Do home-based businesses require a license? Yes. Home-based businesses—including online businesses, personal services, trades, retail from home, or cottage industries—require a license if operating from a residence on Leq’á:mel Lands. Does my business need to match zoning and the Land Use Plan? Yes. All business activities must comply with the Land Use Plan, zoning designations, and any applicable development laws. If your business does not fit the zoning, staff will guide you on next steps (e.g., Development Permit, temporary approval, or rezoning). What are the fees? Business license fees depend on the type of business (e.g., contractor, retail, home-based, industrial, etc.). A current fee schedule is available on this page. How long is a business license valid? Licenses are valid for one calendar year and must be renewed before they expire. Where do I submit my application? Applications can be submitted in person at the Lands Office or by email to lands@leqamel.ca. Who can I contact for help? Reach the Lands Department at 236-602-4441 or lands@leqamel.ca for support.
