Reports To:  Leq’á:mel Administrator
Salary: $70,000 – $89,000 annually (depending on experience)

Leq’á:mel First Nation (LFN) is seeking a compassionate, culturally grounded Family Support Worker to support children, youth, and LFN families, experiencing challenges or crisis situations. This role provides emotional support, advocacy, practical assistance, and cultural reconnection while helping families navigate child and family services, the courts, health care, schools, and other community agencies.

This role promotes family unity, cultural continuity, and community wellness through prevention-focused programming, service coordination, and collaborative relationships with Leq’á:mel First Nation departments, Delegated Band Representatives, other Nations, MCFD, Xyólheméylh, and the Family Court system.

Working closely with families, extended family members, Elders, cultural teachers, educators, health care providers, and social service partners, the Family Support Worker delivers holistic, culturally informed support that strengthens family connections, builds cultural identity, and helps reduce risks that may contribute to child apprehension.

Responsibilities

  1. Crisis Response and Family Support: Deliver compassionate, culturally grounded crisis intervention, emotional support, advocacy, and practical assistance to children, youth, and families, while supporting access to child and family services, health care, schools, Family Court, and other community resources.
  2. Cultural and Community Programming: Plan, coordinate, or deliver culturally grounded programs and activities that promote family wellness, cultural identity, belonging, and connection, including mentorship, parenting and family wellness programs, and cultural reconnection activities.
  3. Community Engagement: Participate in community events, gatherings, and cultural activities that align with family support duties while building relationships, strengthening community connections, and providing outreach, support, and advocacy to community members.
  4. System Navigation and Advocacy: Support families in identifying needs, setting goals, developing action plans, and accessing essential services and resources while advocating for culturally safe, family-centered supports that strengthen family stability and reduce risk in accordance with LFN policies and procedures.
  5. Administrative Duties: Maintain accurate and timely case notes, records, statistics, and program documentation, and track participation and program outcomes.
  6. Legal and Family Court Support: Work alongside Delegated Band Representatives to support families involved in legal services and Family Court processes, including preparing for meetings, coordinating appointments and referrals, and assisting with documentation and communication.
  7. Confidentiality and Records Management: Maintain strict confidentiality, discretion, and sound judgment in handling sensitive family, legal, and personnel information. Ensure all records are accurate, secure, and managed in compliance with LFN policies, privacy legislation, and applicable ethical standards.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Social Sciences, Health Services, or a related field; a BSW is preferred.
  • Current full registration with the BC College of Social Workers, or eligibility for registration is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to practice in accordance with the BCCSW Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
  • Minimum of two years of related experience; experience supporting Indigenous children, youth, and/or families is preferred.
  • Experience in community social services, family support, cultural programming, or wellness work is an asset, including experience with organizations such as Xyólheméylh.
  • Proven proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Valid FoodSafe and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain.

Preferred Knowledge

  • Knowledge of Leq’á:mel First Nation culture, traditions, and history, or willingness to learn.
  • Understanding of relevant child, family, and community service legislation and practice expectations.
  • Familiarity with Indigenous and community-based service agencies and local resources.
  • Knowledge of prenatal support, infant care, parenting support, and family wellness resources.

Position Requirements

  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence, reliable vehicle, and satisfactory driver’s abstract.
  • Acceptable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.

Working Conditions

  • Standard office environment, Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
  • Occasional evenings and weekends will be required to support community engagement activities, meetings, or urgent family needs.
  • Travel may be required for meetings, training, and collaboration with partners and service providers.
  • This position requires full-time, on-site attendance. Remote work is not available, and candidates must live within a reasonable daily commuting distance of the workplace.
